Introduction to Ente
Ente is a remarkable service offering a fully open-source, end-to-end encrypted platform for securely storing data in the cloud. This approach eliminates the need to place trust in the service provider itself. The platform's versatility is showcased through two current applications: Ente Photos, which serves as an alternative to Apple and Google Photos, and Ente Auth, a two-factor authentication (2FA) app that steps in where the deprecated Authy left off.
The project's codebase is openly available in a monorepo, which includes the client apps for iOS, Android, F-Droid, Web, Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as the server that supports these applications. Ente's open-source foundations and cryptographic functions have been rigorously audited by esteemed cybersecurity firms such as Cure53, Symbolic Software, and Fallible. More information can be found at ente.io.
Ente Photos
Ente Photos is the flagship offering, providing a comprehensive photo storage solution that emphasizes privacy and security. It offers features like data replication thrice over, on-device machine learning, cross-platform compatibility, private sharing, collaborative albums, family plans, easy data importation, and seamless export capabilities. All these features are bolstered by robust end-to-end encryption, ensuring users' data security.
Although Ente Photos is a premium service, it offers 5GB of free storage. For those interested in a more hands-on approach, the repository can be cloned for self-hosting.
Ente Auth
Ente Auth represents a significant accomplishment for the project, born out of a necessity identified during the development of Ente Photos. At the time, there were no open-source, end-to-end encrypted authenticator apps available, prompting the team to leverage their existing technology to create Ente Auth.
Ente Auth is completely free and will remain so indefinitely. If users appreciate the service and wish to support it, they are encouraged to explore Ente Photos or share information about Ente within their networks.
